Tofa Weka (ShortFilm): Breaking the Silence on Mental Health

Mental health challenges among young people in Uganda are a growing crisis, with nearly 30% of the population affected. Many adolescents silently battle anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts, underscoring the urgent need for action.

Tofa Weka, meaning “Don’t Stay Silent,” is a short film that emphasizes the importance of speaking up and fostering supportive conversations. Created by Artfield students Katabishawa Nicole and Ismael as part of the “Tofa Weka” Digital Campaign for the Silverback Award, the film aims to inspire safe spaces for sharing struggles and seeking help.

The themes resonate with Uganda’s alarming mental health statistics:

30% of Ugandans face mental health challenges.

65% of school-going adolescents experience anxiety or disruptive behavior.

Suicidal behaviors are on the rise among individuals aged 10–24.

Tofa Weka calls on parents, educators, and communities to break the silence, combat stigma, and prioritize mental well-being. By starting conversations, supporting initiatives, and learning how to help, we can ensure no young person struggles alone.

Together, let’s make a change.
