Ssewaya: Electrician who turned creative

I am a passionate Design creative, Public Speaker, Events Host, Voice over Artiste and a proud Alumni of Artfield Institute of Design. And yes, I love Jesus too! I work with Next Media Services as a Senior Brand Designer. I directly oversee, strategize and often execute design and branding needs for NBS Sport Television, Sanyuka TV, Sanyuka Prime TV as well as Next Media’s special projects.

Visual Communication is an element I believe every brand and business needs to communicate its message effectively. If used appropriately it could turn over profits for a business as well as pass a message and in the long run influence. Visual communication comes in to supplement a product or service, to create a desired perception. So my questions spring from a deep understanding of what one is selling. A clearly defined problem a brand is solving creates such an easy way for visual communication to take its course. A good visual Communication strategy with poor service and customer service doesn’t suffice. I have come to believe everyone everywhere is trying to sell something. This is the first proof for taking this course on. On the other If one is passionate about marketing and selling, he/she is fit to study this. It creates an overwhelming impact on business and brands. In terms of execution, the course itself gives great room to create amazing stuff! If one has always obsessed about creating, this is it!

When I work on project, I ask loads of questions! However, an understanding of what the brand or business is about for me comes first. Then an understanding of the task at hand and who its targeting, I then seek for inspirations (there is nothing new under the sun) however this is not to xerox, however to bench mark. This is the stage to study the competition too. Then I move onto ideating and sketching. Which quickly moves into execution. There is need to move quickly but steadily since time management is such a factor in what we do. Then move to the stage I create final drafts which I share with the client in real time. Well, being I work under such a big brand, I have executed multiple tasks for these brands, however those that stand out is the Look and feel of Sanyuka TV and NBS Sport. I have also collaborated on projects in South Africa for Mel International Schools, Miss Teen Universe, Music Brands (Hloni Music & E-Iconz).

My advice to anyone interested in studying Visual Communication is:

  • Commit to learning everyday and stay teachable.
  • Very marketable skill. There’s always work to do, and people willing to pay.
  • Share what you know with juniors, the more you share the more you learn.
  • Don’t take criticism/feedback personally. Its for your work, not you.
  • Your work will go places you’ve never been (some you’ll never reach, kind of hurts).
