Shaping the Future of Design: Artfield Prepares to Graduate Its Next Cohort

For fifteen years, Artfield Institute of Design has stood as one of the region’s most reliable engines of creative talent, quietly shaping a generation of designers who now lead across East Africa and beyond. Its graduates are found in agencies, production studios, multinational companies, NGOs, and creative hubs from Kigali to Nairobi, and even as far as Europe and the United States. That reputation is not accidental; it is the result of years of discipline, mentorship, and an unwavering commitment to craft.

One of the most memorable milestones in this journey unfolded on December 15, 2023. The campus felt alive long before the ceremony began. Students walked the grounds with their freshly pressed gowns folded over their arms, rehearsing steps and adjusting caps with a mix of nerves and pride. By mid-afternoon, the restless excitement settled into a formal quiet as families, faculty, and guests filled the hall.

At exactly 2 p.m., the procession commenced. The Governing Council entered first, followed by the graduates who were met with applause, ululations, and a swirl of emotion from their families. As each name echoed through the hall, students stepped forward to receive their certificates and shake hands with the Chairman of the Governing Council and the Guest of Honor.

The ceremony was marked by words that have stayed with many. In his address, Mpagi Isaac, the Principal, expressed deep confidence in the graduates, assuring them that the skills they carry will leave an unmistakable mark on the design world. He encouraged them to treat feedback not as critique, but as the energy that drives the next idea.

George Wabweyo, CEO of Volcanic Creative, reminded them that creativity has no finish line. “Run your race,” he said. “This journey is yours, and healthy competition only helps you sharpen your craft.”

A message from the late Frank Muthusi, former CEO of Fireworks Advertising, was also shared as an enduring reminder of artistic discipline. “Soak yourself in your craft,” he urged. “Wherever life places you, look up to those ahead of you. Five years from now, you should be the one others look up to.”

When the ceremony concluded, graduates walked out onto the field, where top industry figures welcomed them into the professional world. Two years later, the record speaks loudly: 98 percent of that cohort is now working in the creative sector, many already leading in their roles.

Now, the Institute is preparing for another defining moment. On December 17, a new class of designers will graduate—this time from the programs in Interior Design, Motion Graphics, Animation, and Visual Communication. The eighth graduation ceremony promises both celebration and reflection, marking the moment another group steps into the world ready to create, challenge, and innovate.

The event will be streamed live on Artfield’s YouTube channel and other social platforms, inviting the wider community to share in the achievement and witness the rise of the next wave of creative talent.
